The Churchville Reservoir
Built in 1942 by the Springfield Water Company, the lake we now call the Churchville Reservoir was first known as Springfield Lake. Formation was done by damming up a section of the Ironworks Creek which is the main flow of water in and out of the lake. It is a shallow reservoir that is meant to be used as a backup for drinking water supplies if the Neshaminy Creek and subsequently the Delaware River get too low.
Currently the lake is still owned by the corporate descendent of Springfield Water Company: Essential Utilities (also previously known as both Aqua America and Philadelphia Suburban Water Company.) this makes the lake privately owned with sections of its surrounding land leased to the County of Bucks for use by the Churchville Nature Center. It is an important wildlife resourse preserved by Essential Utilities and assisted in its preservation needs by the center.
